Bio

Julio Umanzor is a self-taught visual artist based in Brooklyn, New York. Julio was born in Costa Rica where he started to paint since he was a little kid, explaining “It’s the only thing that I always knew how to do”.

Julio moved to NY in 2003. He had to put his career as a visual artist on hold until 2011 when he picked up the brushes again precisely where he left off. He is now a full-time visual artist.

Julio’s interests are varied: philosophical questions pertaining to truth and reality, physics/metaphysics,the sociology of subcultures, human history, natural vs artificial programming, Eastern meditation, classical music, thought-provoking literature, alternative spirituality, mass psychology, martial arts, and football. This wide range of attention is reflected in his artwork which is produced by using a plethora of versatile media and surfaces.

Julio’s artistic expression is constantly evolving, full of new ideas that Julio allows to run wild in his brain until they decide are ready to be expressed visually.
